What is LÆRO?

To address challenges of water contamination and scarcity in urban areas worldwide, LÆRO has developed a compact greywater reuse system called Cycleau that’s designed to retrofit below sinks and showers to recycle greywater to potable standards. Cycleau connects to the drain pipe and water supply lines which are exposed below most sinks, showers, and laundry machines to treat inbound municipal water while recycling greywater to potable standards. Their product offers point-of-use water treatment to eliminate tap water contaminants while helping homeowners save on their water utilities by capturing up to 80% of greywater for on-site potable water reuse.

Cycleau operates by way of a comprehensive, three-stage wastewater treatment system. Physical contaminants are first filtered through a bed media chamber where media such as activated carbon, fine sand, and drainage gravel capture particulate matter in wastewater. Water is then treated by two stages of membrane filtration, including ultrafiltration and reverse osmosis. Water is then disinfected by UV irradiation, which effectively eliminates all bacteria and pathogens remaining in water. These stages mirror the processes used in municipal wastewater treatment plants, yet through Cycleau they’re designed using elements of modularity to scale the hardware needed for these stages to fit the specifications of a below-sink treatment system which is not larger than one foot by two feet.

By scaling these water treatment processes into a compact and easy-to-install unit, Cycleau is designed to improve the accessibility and affordability of water reuse technology for low-income users in cities impacted by divestment. With these functions at hand, LÆRO is capable of serving the more than 4 billion people living in urban areas globally who may be impacted by tap water contamination or the rising costs of water.
