CapyBio
What is CapyBio?
CapyBio is a St. Louis biotechnology company helping scientists develop better human cells for medical research. Scientists use cells grown in laboratories to study diseases and test new medicines, but these cells don’t always behave like the ones in our bodies. CapyBio helps researchers identify these differences and figure out how to improve their cells, making medical research more reliable and reducing costly trial and error. Built on discoveries made at Washington University in St. Louis, CapyBio was founded by scientists who chose to turn their research into a business here, contributing to the city’s growing biotechnology community and helping bring local discoveries closer to patients.
Company Leadership
Guillermo Rivera Gonzalez, PhD
Co-Founder & Chief Scientific Officer
Guillermo Rivera Gonzalez is a scientist and entrepreneur with a background in stem cell biology, genetics, and medical research. Originally from Mexico, he earned his PhD at the University of York in the United Kingdom and continued his research at Yale University before joining Washington University in St. Louis. His work has focused on understanding how cells develop and change, particularly the cells that form fat tissue. As a co-founder of CapyBio, Guillermo is working to bring scientific discoveries out of the laboratory and into practical tools that help researchers develop better medicines. He has chosen to build CapyBio in St. Louis, where he is committed to contributing to the city’s growing biotechnology community.

Samantha A. Morris, PhD
Co-Founder
Samantha Morris is a scientist and professor at Harvard Medical School whose research focuses on understanding how cells develop, change, and acquire their unique functions. Before moving to Harvard, she led a research laboratory at Washington University in St. Louis, where her team developed several of the scientific technologies that became the foundation of CapyBio. Her work combines biology and computer-based approaches to help scientists better understand and control how cells behave. Through CapyBio, Samantha is helping translate these discoveries into technologies that can improve medical research and the development of new treatments.
