Gateway Photonics is a St. Louis-based medical device startup developing OCTPro, a wearable, clinical-grade optical coherence tomography (OCT) headset designed to make advanced retinal imaging more accessible, affordable, and convenient. By integrating optical imaging technology onto a photonic chip, Gateway Photonics aims to reduce the size, complexity, and cost of traditional OCT systems. OCTPro is designed to help bring high-quality retinal imaging beyond traditional eye clinics and into a broader range of healthcare settings. The company’s mission is to make premium eye care accessible everywhere.

Dr. Jane Cai leads corporate strategy, commercialization, and operations at Gateway Photonics. With a Ph.D. in Marketing and cross-sector experience in medtech, marketing strategy, and customer engagement, she translates customer and market insights into business priorities, cultivates relationships with clinical and industry stakeholders, and advances the company’s growth and fundraising efforts.

Co-founder & Head of Technology and Product Development
Dr. Chao Zhou is the Joseph and Florence Farrow Professor of Biomedical Engineering and Ophthalmology at Washington University in St. Louis. A Fellow of Optica, SPIE, and the American Heart Association, he is an internationally recognized expert in optical coherence tomography (OCT), photonic integrated circuits, and translational biomedical optics. As an inventor of multiple patents underlying Gateway Photonics’ core technology, he leads the company’s technology and product development, translating advanced photonics research into innovative medical imaging solutions.
